LI Addiction Resources Celebrates National Recovery Month

Long Island Addiction Resources is proud to celebrate National Recovery Month throughout September. We encourage all to lend their support and spread awareness wherever and however they can. National Recovery Month is sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to increase awareness and understanding of mental health and substance use disorders, while celebrating the strength and encourage of those in recovery. The month-long event provides a special opportunity to learn more about the disease of addiction, factors that can contribute to substance abuse and what we can to do our loved ones who are vulnerable. It also gives us an opportunity to offer special recognition to those who have overcome addiction and are living in sobriety.

What Can I Do?

Communities all over the country are encouraged to sponsor and organize events to educate and inspire local residents. SAMHSA has also created a media tool kit for those looking to know more about events in their area and to deepen their involvement. This includes but is not limited to:

* Instructions to plan and promote Recovery Month activities and events

* Information about substance abuse and mental health issues in the particularly vulnerable military. LGBT and trauma-survivor communities

* Material highlighting the importance of families, communities, and individuals sharing stories of recovery to encourage others to make a personal connection with the recovery movement

* Information for families highlighting the importance of self-care for individuals supporting a loved one in recovery

* Links to information about commonly misused substances and mental health disorders

Extending the Spirit of National Recovery Month

While National Recovery Month is a vital resource for those in recovery, as well as those looking to enrich their education regarding the dangerous public health issue drug addiction, the problem of American substance abuse mandates year-round attention in order to make significant strides toward lasting success. Those of us who live with addition in our family or in circle of friends are constantly reminded of the enormous this problem requires. By going above and beyond September 30, we further empower ourselves and those around us to do more, and to better understand addition.
